And each additional six months of breastfeeding per baby was associated with a four per cent lower risk of heart disease and a three per cent lower risk of stroke.'We have found a new thrombosis [blood clot] target that does not increase bleeding risk,' said Professor Daniel Simon from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland.'Our discovery indicates that you can identify a new pathway and target that mediates blood clotting, but does not affect our body's natural processes to stop bleeding, called hemostasis.'What is the new method? Now scientists have identified a new molecular process in the body, which they say can be manipulated to prevent blood clots without affecting hemostasis. The new molecular process identified by the researchers involves communication between cells that control inflammation and blood clot formation. When the cells interact, a chain reaction is started that leads to rapid inflammation as well as blood clot formation. Scientists found that this interaction causes both large and small artery clots in mice. But a small molecule can be used to stop the cells from properly communicating with one another, which leads to no blood clot formation, the researchers found.

Scientists administered this therapeutic small molecule to mice and found the animals didn't form blood clots following artery injury. Blood clots cause heart attacks by blocking blood flow to the heart, causing muscle to die off. A safer anti- clotting drug The researchers said their findings could lead to new treatment to stop blood clot formation without harmful side effects such as excessive bleeding. 'Current anti- clotting drugs (such as warfarin) and antiplatelet agents (aspirin) are effective in reducing heart attack and stroke, but are associated with increased bleeding and transfusion,' said Dr Simon.'We have learned that bleeding and transfusion complications are equally as bad from a prognosis standpoint as heart attack or stroke.' The study was published in the journal Nature Communications.
